History of Lubbock
The city’s namesake falls from Thomas Saltus Lubbock, a Texas Ranger and brother of the Texas governor during the American Civil War. Officially founded in 1876, just over a decade after the war, Lubbock quickly grew through a merger with Monterey and became the county seat in 1891. In 1909, the first railroad rolled in.
In 1951, the “Lubbock Lights,” a V-shaped light formation, appeared over the city and is generally believed to be one of the first UFO sightings. While the origin of the lights remains a mystery to this day, multiple Texas Technological College science professors supported the sightings and a student even took a picture, giving credibility to the sightings nationwide.
